Privacy and Informatio About You

As part of our Practice it is necessary to collect information from Patients, referring Doctors, Hospitals, Radiology and Pathology Services.

Frankston Anaesthetic Services has adopted the National Privacy Principles and Health Privacy Principles as the basis of its Privacy of Personal and Health Information policy.

What Sort of Information Do We Collect About You?

It is not always possible for Anaesthetists to collect health information direct from their patients and therefore we rely on the diligence of the referring doctor for this information.

When you see an anaesthetist for assessement in our rooms, we need to gather certain information about you. We only ask for information that is nescessary to ensure you receive appropriate health care and meet our billing and reporting procedures.

Medical care requires full knowledge of patient health information by all members of the medical team. To ensure quality and continuity of patient care, from time to time a patient’s health information has to be shared with other health care providers. Some information about patients is also provided to Medicare, and private health funds if relevant, for billing and rebate purposes.

If a patient is seen in the rooms of Frankston Anaesthetic Services the information obtained at that time is kept on the premises in a secure place. Any information used in a hospital is kept in the Medical Records department of that hospital. Information may need to be provided to others as part of normal business practice.

This includes raising accounts and obtaining payment from third parties, bad debt collection and a bad debt registration. Similarly, government organisations and courts may demand information to be provided to them. This is covered under the Health Records Act 2001, Principle No. 2.

Access to Health Information

Patients have a right to access their information. Application form to access your health information are available by contacting us.

Upon establishment that your request is within the legislative framework, we will advise you that we have received your request, outline costs associated with providing access such as photocopying, and advise a date by which the information will be available. In the event that we cannot fulfil your request we will advise you of such, including the reason why.

Upon request a patient’s health information held by this practice will be made available to another health service provider.

Parents/Guardians and Children

The right of children to privacy of their health information, based on the professioanl judgement of the Doctor and consistent with the law, might at times restrict access to this information by parents or guardians.

Complaints

It is important to us that your expectations about the way in which we handle your information are the same as ours.

Please do not hesitate to discuss any concerns, questions or complaints about any issues related to the privacy of your personal information with your Doctor.
